Description

With continued growth in all of our sectors, Costain is hiring for a Civil & Structural Engineer to join our multi-discipline engineering and design team.

This role is within the Civil and Structural Design Discipline within CEL. Costain’s multi-discipline engineering and design team deliver design mainly across Costain projects.  The design outputs range from studies to detailed design for permanent and temporary works.  This team focus on the delivery of sustainable, safe-by-design outputs with a strong constructability ethos.

The fundamental requirement of this role is to deliver civil and structural analysis, calculations, reports and specifications for projects in a range of sectors, including water, rail and highways. 

Rail experience is desired as well as suitable permanent works experience designing foundations, fencing, ducting, drainage, highways for substations or similar.

This is a hybrid role. Your office will be in Manchester, office attendance typically up to 3 days per week, with remote working to promote well being and occasional visits to other offices and sites.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Prepare preliminary and detailed design analysis, calculations, specifications and related documentation for civil and structural temporary and permanent works

  • Communicate designs effectively to the BIM teams

  • Challenge and deliver value engineering solutions

  • Be supervised and mentored by our senior engineers in a friendly teamwork environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential 

  • Good general IT skills, MS Office Suite
  • Good problem solving, presentation and communications (written and verbal) skills
  • Some UK experience in design of foundations, drainage, highways, steel and concrete an advantage
  • Have UK engineering experience from previous employers or work placements
  • Be able to accurately report progress / risk / opportunities / change etc
  • Be digitally proficient in multiple design systems / software
  • Be able to lead design meetings, deliver presentations and groups
  • Be passionate for sustainable design  
  • Good organisation, communication, and time management skills 
  • Eligibility to obtain Security Clearance - UK Citizen or UK resident for minimum of 5 years.

 

Desirable

  • Mobility to work on various projects throughout the UK  
  • Have site or construction experience
  • Rail experience is desired as well as suitable permanent works experience designing foundations, fencing, ducting, drainage, highways for substations or similar.



Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum BEng Civil or Structural Engineering

 

Desirable

  • Additional technically focussed qualifications / training
  • Safety passport or similar
