Our apprentice programme is a great opportunity to gain a recognised qualification from college, whilst working on one of our projects and earning a salary.

Joining us as an Apprentice Civil Engineer, you will be part of the HS2 team working at Canterbury Road ventilation shaft.  The role will involve providing support to all aspects of construction while developing the necessary skills to progress within a Contracting organization.

About the project

The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high speed services

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.

What does an Apprenticeship at Costain offer me? 

There are a wide range of apprenticeships available, both in levels of qualification and length of study at Costain we have a variety of apprenticeships on offer, working on projects around the UK, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail. Water, airports and tunnels, and with a number of partners and joint ventures.

The level and training provider for your apprenticeship will depend on the skills you present at interview. The Early Careers team will register you with a suitable training provider who can support the delivery of your qualification. Being an apprentice means you will work both on-the-job with your project at site, and off-the-job with the provider.

When taking on one of the many apprenticeships on offer by Costain, you will be supported by your project line manager and team, the Costain Early Careers Team, and the training provider of your academic qualification. The training provider may be a college, a university or even an independent training provider.

You will be supported throughout your apprenticeship by your local team and line manager, and you will be given time to carry out your studies with the provider etc. Your on-the-job training will be in line with the work available on site but will afford the opportunity to ensure that you are given on site experience required to meet the technical and competency levels in order to achieve your apprenticeship goals.



Responsibilities
  • Work with team to develop and draft Risk Assessment Method Statements
  • Assist with site surveys, setting out and site investigations
  • Develop and implement Inspection and Test Plans and associated check sheet for the works
  • Ensure and undertake quality checks in accordance with the ITP’s
  • Draft Permits for the works
  • Prepare and maintain registers to support safe system of works
  • Liaise with the Site Foreman to ensure adherence to safe methods of work
  • Ensure health and safety is given the highest priority in the delivery of the works
  • Spend 20% of your working hours by studying towards a Level 4 or Level 6 Civil or Construction Site Engineering qualification
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project.



Qualifications
  • GCSE or equivalent 5 including English, Maths and Science (Grade 9-4 or A* - C) Essential
  • A Level or equivalent 3 A Levels to include Maths and a physical science (Grade B (in Maths) B, C or above) and/or BTEC or equivalent L3 Extended Diploma - Engineering related (Grade DDM or above) Essential
  • A passionate individual looking to undertake an apprenticeship with an award-winning employer

  • Someone who is creative with a keen interest in the latest technology
  • Someone that enjoys challenges and problem solving in their day-to-day work
  • All appropriate and equivalent, qualifications will be considered

*As some of our project sites are based in remote locations, it is worth noting that you will be required to have the ability to travel to the site.
