General Operative

Building a sustainable tomorrow

We are seeking a skilled and reliable General Operative to join our construction team at our Hinkley Point C site in Bridgwater, Somerset. 

The General Operative will be responsible for preparing and maintaining construction sites, including excavation, laying foundations, and installing drainage systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in construction and a commitment to safety and a right-first-time attitude.

As Hinkley Point C is a nuclear licensed site, additional security checks will need to be made – BPSS level of security clearance is required. These checks can take up to 8 weeks to process. Only candidates holding right to work in the UK can be considered for this role. 

Pay

• Salary: £14.59 - £16.94 – depending on experience
• Permanent, Full Time
• Schedule: Rotation of 7 days on, 3 days off followed by 7 days on, 4 days off

Your work environment

• The role involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Manual labour is required, including lifting, digging, and operating machinery.
• Working a shift pattern is mandatory

Your mission

• Set up site boundaries with temporary fencing and safety barriers as per approved traffic management plan.
• Perform excavation and grading using hand tools to approved levels.
• Safely remove and dispose of excavated materials.
• Lay and compact sub-base materials.
• Assist in the installation of foundations, including pouring and levelling concrete to the standard required on a nuclear project.
• Lay ducts for utilities such as electricity, gas, and water.
• Connect drainage systems to main sewer and water lines.
• Lay kerbs and drainage products to approved line and level.
• Follow all health and safety regulations on-site.
• Always use personal protective equipment (PPE) as instructed.
• Report any hazards or unsafe conditions to the supervisor.

Who are we looking for?

Experience:

• Experience of working on a nuclear licenced site is desirable.
• Proven experience with excavations, concrete work, and drainage installation.

Skills:

• Proficiency with hand tools and construction machinery.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Physical fitness and the ability to work in all weather conditions.

Certifications:

• Valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card for role.
• Health and Safety training (e.g., First Aid, Manual Handling, deep excavation training) is a plus.
