General Operative – Abingdon

Salary: £35,000–£45,000 per annum

Are you reliable, safety‑focused, and looking to build a long‑term career in a fast‑paced operational environment?
We’re looking for a General Operative to join our team in Abingdon, supporting the smooth running of our aggregates, asphalt, and recycling operations.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a hands-on environment, enjoys variety, and wants to develop specialist skills in mobile plant operations and weighbridge management.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a General Operative, you’ll play a key part in ensuring the depot operates safely, efficiently, and professionally. Your responsibilities include:

Weighbridge & Customer Service

  • Operating the weighbridge accurately in line with company procedures.

  • Producing weight tickets for incoming and outgoing vehicles.

  • Ensuring all materials leaving the site meet quality requirements.

  • Supporting customers and hauliers, ensuring their needs are met quickly and professionally.

  • Handling incoming telephone enquiries and directing them to the correct team.

  • Greeting and managing visitors, ensuring they sign in and are directed safely.

Transport & Site Operations

  • Organising the loading of lorries delivering or collecting aggregates and asphalt.

  • Optimising transport capacity to maximise efficiency.

  • Working closely with other Weighbridge Clerks to ensure vehicle movements are effectively coordinated.

Mobile Plant Operations

  • Operating mobile plant safely for loading and moving materials.

  • Completing daily plant inspections before, during, and after use.

  • Maintaining equipment to manufacturer and HSE standards.

  • Safe refuelling and reporting any defects or near misses.

General Duties

  • Keeping workstations clean, tidy, and secure.

  • Ensuring compliance with the Weights and Measures Act, Competition Act, and company policies.

  • Following all health, safety, and environmental procedures.

  • Reporting any driver performance concerns to the Unit Manager.

Training & Qualifications

You don’t need previous experience:
Full training will be provided to the right candidate, including the opportunity to work towards an NVQ/QCF in Mobile Plant Operations.
