The salary range for this role is £67,468- £78,028 depending on the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Background and Context

The School of Engineering and Technology is seeking to appoint a professor in Civil Engineering to provide academic leadership in research, teaching and industry/community engagement for a new Civil Engineering Programme. The post holder will have the responsibility to shape the academic and research direction within the subject area with a strong focus on growth of student numbers, building research capacity and developing industry/community engagement. The candidate is expected to be a leading expert in one or more subject areas in Civil Engineering and has academic leadership experiences to lead the new educational and research developments.

With increasing global demand for sustainable engineering solutions and operations, the School of Engineering and Technology is committed to delivering high-quality education and impactful research in civil engineering. The postholder will work closely with regional, national, and international partners to ensure that the new programmes meet the standard of modern engineering practice and the needs of local and national industry and the accreditation bodies.

The role includes building a high-quality research profile in a broad range of Civil Engineering subject areas that is aligned with school’s strengths in sustainable engineering, and renewable energy, and that has practical relevance to industry. This is a pivotal role in establishing a strong foundation for the Civil Engineering programme, with a focus on research excellence, graduate employability, and impactful industry partnerships.

The post holder needs to demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and will work within the subject group of Civil Engineering contributing to research and teaching in the relevant discipline, and is expected to have knowledge, understanding and experience of delivering specialist and general course material to undergraduate and postgraduate students, from first principles, through to Masters level.  Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong academic credentials and the ability to contribute to both taught and research-led activities within the school.

The Professor will have a strong track record of securing external research funding from government and private sources and will be able and willing to take a strong leadership role to advance the Civil Engineering subject area in its reputation as a centre of excellence in education and research, both nationally and internationally. Collaboration across faculty and university’s research institutes and campus facilities will be encouraged to deliver innovative solutions to real-world engineering challenges.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

  • Lead on the development and implementation of teaching and learning strategy for the Civil Engineering programme
  • Lead on the design of inclusive and accessible learning resources, working with student support and educational design experts within and beyond the University.
  • Providing outstanding teaching using contemporary pedagogy, a range of delivery methods, and innovative delivery methods in the broad area of civil engineering with a particular focus on sustainable construction, structural and environmental engineering.
  • Publishing high quality articles in civil engineering and associated areas which are ranked as nationally and internationally excellence, and making significant contributions to the REF 2029 and beyond.
  • Leading external research grants applications and contributing to growth in school and faculty’s research income
  • Lead research and collaborative partnerships with external bodies, lead consultancy and enterprise activity in the civil engineering areas
  • Supervising to Master and PhD level research students in civil engineering and growing the PhD cohort.
  • Mentoring junior academic colleagues in the school, especially academic staff in civil engineering including co-publishing, co-supervision and co-submission of external competitive grants.
  • Leading development of research strategy in Civil Engineering that aligns with School and University research themes.
  • Providing administrative leadership as required in relation to the civil engineering teaching program and associated research activities
  • Providing leadership and expertise to foster collaborative links across the University, with industry/community and with other institutions.
  • Strategic contribution to School objectives in relation to NSS (and other surveys), TEF and student recruitment and retention.
  • Undertake external examining (UG, PGT or PGR including international appointments) and/or external Panel members for validation, review, and other QA activity.
  • Lead the development of new and creative approaches in response to research and commercial changes.
  • Strategic contribution to internationalisation, e.g. development of international student markets at UG and PG level or development of international research collaborations or teaching partnerships.
  • Leading contribution to work related to addressing challenges of equality, diversity, and inclusion in all its dimensions.
  • Strategic contribution to the expansion of Civil Engineering in relation to the recruitment of students at all levels and increasing the diversity of the student body.
  • Raise the profile of the school’s reputation through knowledge exchange, partnership development and public, policy or practice engagement.
  • Maintain strategic and sustained engagement with significant sector bodies (e.g. membership of UKRI grant review panels, membership of REF panels, TEF Assessor, NTF Assessor)
  • Act as line manager for matters relating to the employment of staff and ensuring the work is allocated fairly, according to skills and capacity.
  • Appraise and advise staff on personal and career development plans, having overall responsibility for the welfare of staff.
  • Foster inter-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary team working Demonstrates guidance for, and support of, educational teams within and beyond the University, forging cultures of effective mentoring.

Person Specification

  • A PhD, or equivalent qualification in an area of Civil Engineering.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a distinguished and active track record of teaching expertise in a range of areas in civil engineering and sustainable construction
  • Demonstrated evidence of innovation in teaching to support students in order to maximise their learning.
  • Evidence of significant educational leadership relevant to teaching and learning in higher education and demonstrated experience leading innovation and inspiring excellence amongst colleagues.
  • Significant experience in curriculum development and teaching methodology for topics and programs of study, including reviews and internal and external accreditation activities.
  • A distinguished international research reputation in civil engineering relevant to sustainable construction and engineering that is evidenced by invitations to give keynote addresses, a record of sustained highly quality well cited publications, and the attraction of several significant competitive external grants.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the supervision of honours and research higher degree students.
  • Significant contribution to the discipline and/or profession within a relevant external professional domain and within a wider community context at local, national and international level.
  • A demonstrated strong track record of establishing effective research collaborations with external national and international partners.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated evidence of the ability to develop, establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and industry.
